Chesed/Social Deeds or
Gemilut Chasadim/Deeds of
Mutual Social Responsibility is the third pillar for Jewish living
in the world. Torah (education), Avodah (worship)
and Gemilut Chasadim together describe the Jewish
relationship with God and with one's fellow human beings — and
suggest how this relationship is lived out daily.
Gemilut Chasadim literally means 'deeds of mutual social
responsibility' with an emphasis on the last two words. Our approach
at Holy Blossom Temple is to understand that since we are all God's
creatures, we are obligated to one another. This is especially true
for those who are on the margins and most vulnerable, be they the
Jews within our midst or the non-Jews beyond our doors.
Holy Blossom has a long history of engagement in the concerns of
the greater community. What we currently do in the area of Gemilut Chasadim reflects both our historical approach and our
contemporary understanding of how to bring a bit of God's heaven
down to earth, while being realistic about what is, and hopeful
about what might be.
