The first night, when I ventured down, I wanted to see for myself exactly what we do. I went in as an employee of Holy Blossom, never thinking how that short visit would influence my next 9 years. But after that first evening, of watching the volunteers interacting with our guests and seeing our guests’ gratitude for the volunteers, I realized I was hooked. And that one night changed my life forever.

When children participate in high quality Jewish Early Childhood educational experiences, we are enabling them and their families to create permanent connections to Judaism and creating tomorrow’s Jewish adults. Come on in to the Early Childhood Centre and hear the sounds of engaged children and parents or watch our inspiring teachers. It is pure joy.

This is only one element of creating a new culture at Holy Blossom Temple – where becoming a Bar Mitzvah is just a start to a Jewish Journey that includes deep and meaningful teen involvement and attendance in a gap-year program before university, college or any other ‘next station’ on life’s journey.

The warmth and joy was well reflected in the way Fredzia and I parted from the congregation… The farewell party was unforgettable, with our whole family present and some five hundred members of the congregation and friends in attendance… Fredzia and I attend services when we are in the city and are very happy to sit together in a pew, trying to be as inconspicuous as circumstances permit. We see our personal friends, both in Canada and when they come to Israel, and we continue to feel part of the community. from – Six Lives, a memoir

When Jews learn the animating ideas of Jewish tradition we are changed, deepened in our humanity and identity. Clearly, you don’t have to accept all ideas, but the willingness to assume that the writers of the Talmud, for instance, were at least as sophisticated as are we is a good pace to start to take Judaism seriously. Much of what I have endeavoured to do as a rabbi, and at Holy Blossom Temple, has been to make this happen with other Jews.

We feel music with our whole being. Through music we can tap into the beat of our souls. It has the power to move us, opening our minds and emotions. When our liturgy and music come together; when we join as a Holy Blossom community in song and prayer, there is hope for strength, calm, clarity and exuberant joy.
